Open Comb Razors Reviews
Great Razor, Heavier Than It Looks
WCS Midnight Collection Razor 110B, Black Stainless Steel, Open Comb I am a long winded reviewer. Short version: This is a great razor and you should buy it if you want or want to try an open comb DE razor. My only issue is that the larger handle is heavier than it looks but no so heavy that it is a problem. After about 30 shaves I am very happy with the razor and have become accustomed to the weighty handle.

I finally decided that I needed an open comb DE razor. Being the cheapskate that I am I went looking for a "reasonably priced" razor to try before I spent a lot of money on a "new" shaving technology that I didn't like. I found the Open Comb Midnight Collection Razor 110B, in black stainless steel and really like the look of it. So I dropped it in my cart and tried to order it. I must not be the only one who liked the look of this razor because it turned out to be out of stock. So I left the web site and didn't think anymore about it. I would check back in a couple of weeks and see if it was back in stock. Much to my surprise I got an email from WCS telling me that I had left something in my shopping cart and was I still interested in purchasing it. I thought it might be back in stock but it wasn't. I emailed WCS back and said I was interested in the razor and could they let me know when it came back in stock. And if possible could I get a rain check on the sale price. WCS was great about responding to me and as soon as they had the razor back in stock I got an email and surprisingly it was still on sale so I got it for a great price.

On to the review. the razor is well made and seems to be very sturdy. It is black anodized stainless steel so that is not a surprise. I was pleased with the matte black finish. I was a little bit surprised at how heavy the handle was. I shouldn't have been, Again it is stainless steel and the handle is much thicker than most "normal sized" razor handles. The weight was not a deal breaker and in fact after a month of shaving with it I have become accustomed to the size and weight of the handle. In fact I really like the weight and my old Edwin Jagger DE seems really light in comparison.

It took me a few tries to get used to an open comb razor. It is very aggressive when compared to a closed comb razor, which should be no surprise. I got a few nicks and scrapes the first week but nothing too surprising. Worst damage I did to my face was when I did a stupid thing and caught my chin with the end of the blade and managed to take a chunk out of my self. So I spent a week shaving with my old electric until I healed up enough to get back to my wet shaving routine. Since then I have been very respectful of the open comb and have had a very good experience with it.

With my old closed comb razors I would have to take 3-5 passes to get a clean BBS shave. With this open comb razor I am BBS in 2 passes. 2 very cautious and careful passes.

I would really recommend this razor to anyone interested in trying an open comb razor. If you are not interested in a weightier razor get the more standard size handle. If like me you prefer a substantial razor get this one and you will be glad you did.
Top gear!
WCS Midnight Collection Safety Razor 84B, Black Stainless Steel, Open Comb My second razor of the WCS Midnight Collection (the other being a closed comb). Best value for money. The open comb is medium aggressive, which is ok for me. Nice handle and good grip. Looks great.
Muhle R41 from 2011
Muhle R41 Double Edge Safety Razor, Open Comb I revisited the R41, with Persona Reds and tallow based soap. It does VERY well, and I compared to Merkur 38C. R41 gets closer with fewer passes. However, it takes skill. It is not for beginners, but once technique is refined; it is a GREAT close smooth shave!!
Amazing razors for the price!
WCS Midnight Collection Razor 78B, Black Stainless Steel, Open Comb I'm an everyday shaver and the WCS Midnight collection open and closed razors performed flawlessly. They are well balanced and solid. The original black stainless steel head head I purchased had a slight defect on it and the WCS team immediately replaced it. These are great razors at a really good value. I would highly recommend you take a look at this collection. All the best Frank P.
First 3-piece Razor
WCS Classic Collection Razor 110S, Stainless Steel, Open Comb I've had this razor for close to year. I wanted a heavy razor, but I wasn't sure a "stubby" handle would work out for me(big hands). Well, this razor convinced me after the first shave. I have one of those beards that look like a five o'clock by about noon, but the weight of the handle helps when I'm shaving. When I started traditional shaving, I bought a cheap butterfly razor. The razor looked pretty, but it only survived a couple of months. This,on the other hand, has that cool industrial look and works great!
WCS Classic Collection Razor 88S, Stainless Steel, Open Comb I have never had a closer shave. I still need to try different blades, but this open comb razor has become my favorite.
WCS Midnight Collection Razor 88B, Black Stainless Steel, Open Comb Aggressive razor, just like I need. I have a very hard time getting a BBS shave with closed comb safety bar razor heads. Apparently it's due to my thick, coarse beard. My whiskers grow right up to and almost out of the edge of my lips. I need a razor head to be aggressive. This is one of the few razors I love. BBS shave almost effortless. If you like aggressive razor heads, this is for you!
Muhle R41 Double Edge Safety Razor, Open Comb
Muhle R41 Double Edge Safety Razor, Open Comb My favorite razor. I shave my entire head every other day. The only thing is you have to be super careful. If you go too fast you will cut yourself. I was used to blowing through a shave in 5 minutes with a Proglide. But this definitely gives you the closest shave a any razor. Take the time and do it right.
